A Kids Birthday Party in Kitchener-Waterloo Where Every Kid Builds

A Kids Birthday Party in Kitchener-Waterloo Where Every Kid Builds

Planning a kids birthday party in Kitchener-Waterloo? If you are tired of the same play place routine, there is another option: a build party, where every guest builds a real wood project and takes it home. And it can happen right in your living room or backyard.

Here is how a build party works, which ages it suits, five project ideas, a simple planning checklist and what it costs.

Why a build party

  • Every kid makes something real. The party favour is the project they built, not a plastic toy.
  • It keeps kids busy. Building holds attention far longer than most party games.
  • It suits mixed groups. Quiet kids and busy kids both enjoy it.
  • No driving around. The party comes to your home, so you are not packing the car or watching the clock at a venue.

How it works at home

A WowSkills Build Party lasts 90 minutes. We arrive early to set up, cover the floor and lay out pre-cut wood, tools and safety glasses for every guest. The party starts with hellos and a five-minute safety talk. Then everyone builds, with help at every step. After the build there is time to decorate, race or play, and the party ends with photos and packing up. We clean up before we leave.

Your job as the host is easy: welcome the guests, keep the cake safe, and take photos. We bring everything else, from the floor covers to the sandpaper. If you have a garage or a covered patio, it makes a great workshop, but a kitchen or dining table works just as well.

Here is a typical timeline:

  • 0:00 Hello, and safety glasses on.
  • 0:10 Build time.
  • 1:05 Decorate, race or play.
  • 1:25 Photos and pack up.

What ages

Build parties work best for ages 7 to 12. Younger guests are welcome too, with a grown-up helping. We recommend one adult helper for every six kids, and we only use small hand tools at parties.

We pick the project to match the youngest guests. For a mixed group, the robot and the race car are good choices, because younger kids can do the simple steps while older kids add extra details and decorations.

5 party project ideas

  1. Mini Racer with a race ramp. We bring the wheels and a ramp for races.
  2. Block Bot buddy. A small wooden robot with rope arms and screw eyes.
  3. Bird Feeder. A hanging feeder for backyard birds.
  4. Mini Toolbox. A real toolbox with a rope handle.
  5. Holiday Tree mini. A small glowing wood tree, for November and December parties.

Planning checklist

  • Date: book 3–4 weeks ahead, especially for weekends.
  • Space: a room, garage or backyard with space for everyone to sit at a table.
  • Tables: one or two tables, plus chairs or stools.
  • Guest count: up to 8 kids in the base party, up to 12 in total.
  • Cake: plan cake and snacks for after the build, when hands are clean.

On the invitation, ask guests to wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get a little paint or sawdust on them, and to tie back long hair. Let parents know that every child goes home with their own project, so they can plan room in the car.

Costs to expect

Our Build Party starts from $299 for up to 8 kids, with $30 for each extra kid up to 12. That price includes pre-cut wood, all tools, safety glasses, the safety talk, the build, a mini show-off at the end, clean-up and a take-home project for every guest. A $50 deposit holds your date.

Travel is included in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge. Nearby towns such as Guelph, Elmira, St. Jacobs, New Hamburg, Ayr, Breslau and Baden have a small travel fee. Your other costs are the usual ones: cake, snacks and drinks.

Because the projects double as party favours, many families find they can skip the goodie bags. And since the party happens at home, there is no venue fee to add on top.
